Canoeing on Holy River in Lithuania, 2023

Holy River (lit. Šventoji) is a river in eastern Lithuania. It flows from Lake Duksto and ends in the Neris River. Its length is 246 km, which makes it the longest river that flows entirely within the territory of this country.
It is one of the most beautiful rivers in Lithuania, very picturesque. The river flows through naturally protected areas, and along its entire length it has a buffer zone in the form of wide green belts adjoining both sides, which is clearly visible in satellite photos. Its name is related to the baptism of Lithuania and Lithuania's conversion to Christianity, which gives it a mystical vibe.
During the entire two-week trip, we saw only one kayaker and a few anglers. There are many public and private campsites along the route, which have been abandoned for a long time. We were completely alone on all of them, except for one modern campsite in Anykščiai. Due to the heavily overgrown and steep banks, finding a place to camp outside the designated areas is very difficult. The river is calm (except for a few moderately difficult rapids), very clean, without any garbage on the banks, not damaged by civilization and completely forgotten by water sportsmen.
